What Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has changed to seal Thiago Alcantara transfer | Football | Sport
boss is breaking his own traditions when it comes to midfielder Thiago Alcantara, according to reports. Manchester United have emerged as potential suitors for the 29-year-old, despite landing Donny van de Beek from Ajax. But it’s the Premier League champions who appear to be frontrunners in the race to sign the Spain international.
Thiago has flourished during his seven years at Bayern, winning seven Bundesliga titles and recently helped them lift the Champions League trophy.
However, he’s now poised to leave the Allianz Arena behind for a new challenge.
Bayern have admitted they’re likely to sell Thiago this summer, with the 29-year-old’s contract in Bavaria expiring next season.
And, so far, Liverpool and Manchester United have both been strongly linked with the Spain international.
United have signed Van de Beek from Ajax but are daring to dream of another midfield swoop, with Thiago first on their radar during his time at La Liga giants Barcelona.

And, in an attempt to ensure Liverpool win the race for his signature, say Klopp has changed his approach and methodology to transfer business.
Usually, the German doesn’t push for his board to make signings. Instead he relies on the nous of Peter Edwards and the club’s scouts when it comes to improving the team.
It’s an approach that has worked, too, with Liverpool unearthing gems far and wide to ensure they return to their perch of old.
Yet the report says Klopp has been ‘very keen to make his voice heard’ when it comes to Thiago.
It’s said he wants the quality and drive of the Bayern star in his squad next season as he looks to win the league title for the second year on the trot.

And he’s unwilling to miss out on another top target, having seen Timo Werner leave RB Leipzig for Premier League rivals Chelsea instead.
Liverpool are said to be likely to sell Gini Wijnaldum to Barcelona to fund a deal, with new Nou Camp boss Ronald Koeman keen to unite with his compatriot in Catalonia.
And that means that, though United are in the race to sign Thiago at present, it’s the Merseyside giants who appear favourites to win the race for the Bayern star.
Meanwhile, Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp has opened up on Thiago and expressed a belief the Bayern star would add stardust to Klopp’s impressive squad.
“Graeme Souness always talks about Liverpool’s dominance in the ’80s. The first thing they would do after winning the league would be to sign one or two players just to freshen things up and keep everyone on their toes,” Redknapp told Sky Sports.
“Sir Alex Ferguson certainly did that [at United] as well. I wouldn’t necessarily say Liverpool have to go all in for Thiago, you’ve got to be careful in the transfer market.
“But Thiago would be a really good signing for Liverpool, and one who could give everybody a bit of a lift and make sure everybody knows there will be no resting on their laurels ahead of next season.”
Redknapp’s point was supported by United legend Gary Neville, who added: “That demand of the same squad, the same players, the same messages, the same relationships, the same jokes for two or three years – just something slightly different in the dressing room, that addition, just sometimes can become a little bit draining.
“And I think the idea of Thiago coming for Liverpool is a big moment.
“Because I think it deals with all those issues that can occur after two or three seasons.”
