The bonus was written into his contract as an incentive to keep him at Emirates Stadium until the end of his contract, but things have taken an unexpected turn since Ozil put pen to paper on fresh terms.

Ozil has not played a single minute since the 2019-20 season restarted after lockdown earlier this year and he was axed from their 25-man Europa League squad last week.

The former Real Madrid man must now wait until October 20 to learn if he has a spot in Arteta’s Premier League squad.

The 31-year-old has since been left out of Arsenal’s Europa League squad and risks being omitted from their Premier League one too, which must be submitted on October 20.

It means Ozil faces the very real prospect of seeing out the final year of his £350,000 a week contract without playing a single match this season and Wenger has told both the player and Arsenal that would be a waste.

“I feel it is a waste for him,” Wenger told the BBC. “Firstly because he’s in the years where a player of his talent can produce the most.

“That’s why I just never felt Sancho was the right type of player because we’ve got three of that type of player already.

“To spend £100m or whatever, I didn’t think it was right. I wasn’t that disappointed.

“Look, he’s a brilliant player and he’ll probably improve any team but I just didn’t think there was the need for him this year.”
