Thiago Alcantara injury: Liverpool ace had worrying chat with Klopp after Everton draw | Football | Sport

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has revealed that Thiago Alcantara may have suffered an injury in the 2-2 draw with Everton. The £20million man was on the end of a horror challenge late in the second half from Richarlison, who was shown a straight red by Michael Oliver.

Thiago was making his first Liverpool start following his summer switch from Bayern Munich.

He enjoyed an impressive afternoon across Stanley Park but was given a rude awakening to the physicality of the Premier League.

Richarlison smashed into the top of his leg and while Thiago was able to walk away from the challenge, it appears he may have picked up a problem.

Klopp said after the game: “As I was leaving the pitch, Thiago tells me that in the red card situation with Richarlison he thinks he has got injured.

“We will see whether it is true or not. The player felt like this and we will have to take a look.”

Speaking to BT Sport, the German again hinted that Thiago may be set for a spell on the sidelines.

“It’s not just a red card on Thiago, it’s a messy foul and now we don’t know what [injury] he has. It looks not good to be honest,” he said.

Thiago is not the only Liverpool player who has picked up an injury though.

Virgil van Dijk hobbled off after he was on the receiving end of a reckless challenge from Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

The tackle went unpunished due to the fact Van Dijk was standing in an offside position.

Nonetheless, he could not continue and will now undergo a scan on the extent of the injury.

“I don’t know [how serious it is], I don’t know, but it is not good,” Klopp said on Van Dijk.

“Virgil played for us I don’t know how many games in a row. He plays with pain, he plays with pretty much everything, but he couldn’t play on. That’s not good.”

Former Liverpool midfielder Joe Cole thinks Van Dijk could be set for a spell on the sidelines following Pickford’s challenge.

“This is the Van Dijk incident,” Cole told BT Sport. “Offside or not offside, I don’t think there was any maliciousness but Pickford has gone out there and it’s very, very dangerous.

“Arguably Liverpool’s most influential player, Van Dijk, he’s looking at a spell on the sidelines for me.

“It doesn’t look nice, does it? I’ve done my knee in a similar fashion and it always makes me squeamish watching it, so he’s going to have a spell on the sidelines.”

Liverpool have sent Thiago and Van Dijk for scans, following their suspected knee injuries.
