Everton news and transfers – James Rodriguez, Abdoulaye Doucoure and Allan latest, goalkeepers linked

Italian transfer expert labels ‘Galactico whisperer’ Ancelotti reunions as ‘weird’

Italian football expert Gabriel Marcotti has expressed his surprise at Carlo Ancelotti’s potential reunions with Allan and James Rodriguez, labelling the situation “weird”.

The Blues are closing in on deals for the Napoli midfielder and Real Madrid forward, who Ancelotti has worked with at his previous clubs, having also agreed a fee with Watford for midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure.

It’s hardly unheard of for football managers to buy players they have worked with before and trust but Marcotti seems surprised and told ESPN FC if all three do arrive at Goodison, the Blues must target a top six finish. He said:

I think it would necessarily have to be, because these guys aren’t coming cheap.

I do kind of feel, as much as I love Carlo, it is kind of weird going back to players he’s worked with before like Allan and of course James Rodriguez. That generally doesn’t always sit right with me.

Doucoure I think if he goes back to being the player he was two years ago, he can be devastating in the middle of the park.

Obviously he can get the best out of Rodriguez. Allan might be on his way down but I think it’s a slow trajectory for him.

When he was at his best, he was arguably or certainly one of the best central midfielders in Serie A.

I think they’ll give you a boost but for him to work longer term at Everton, he’s got to get the best out of his young players as well.

Marcotti also spoke about the challenge of getting the best of James Rodriguez

If you have a guy like [Gylfi] Sigurdsson, Rodriguez in many ways has a lot of similarities.

Rodriguez in the Premier League, he’s a guy who generally gives you his best when he’s in the hole and the team is built around him.

Can you build a side around him in the Premier League? I think it’s a challenge.

That said, Ancelotti is the Galactico whisperer so maybe he can make it work with James.
