European football is back next week. I’ve loved it since I was boy and first saw that Ajax shirt. It looked so exotic. It looked like how they played, from another planet. I’d grown up on stories of Welsh clubs’ heroics on the continent, the most famous being Cardiff City beating the mighty Real Madrid at Ninian Park only a few weeks after I was born.

There were three trophies to play for then: the most famous was the European Cup, which was a real Champions League as you had to be title winners to compete.

Then there was the now defunct Cup Winners’ Cup (this is where the Welsh clubs went) and the Uefa Cup, which is now the sprawling never-ending Europa League and
