Arsenal have been able to land some of the best players in the world but on the flipside, they have almost missed out on a fair few too.
Thierry Henry and Patrick Vieira are just a few of the big names that the Gunners were able to secure but there is also a long list of those they let slip.
In 2003 the were looking at Barcelona’s youth teams and a young Lionel Messi caught their attention.

Only two years before that the Gunners had tried to sign Ronaldinho but were denied by the his inability to get a work permit.
The biggest name that got away though was Cristiano Ronaldo.
Ronaldo joined Manchester United in 2003, largely unknown at the time but Sir Alex Ferguson was well aware of the 18-year-old’s incredible ability.
He of course went on to establish himself as the greatest player of this current generation.
However, it could have been Arsenal boasting about snatching the 18-year-old Ronaldo.
Arsene Wenger revealed in an interview withjust how close he came to snaring the superstar.
“I would say there is not one player, there are 50,” Wenger said when asked about his biggest signing regret.

“On the other hand, maybe the closest [to that] was Cristiano Ronaldo, when he signed for Man Utd.
“We had an agreement with Sporting and Man Utd took Carlos Queiroz as assistant coach, and they just outbid us quickly and took Ronaldo.
“But we had an agreement basically.
“He had the shirt of Arsenal, I had lunch with him and his mother at the training ground.
“It’s one example but there were so many. The history of a big club is full of missed great players.”
