Chelsea are set to open talks with midfielder Jorginho over the next few days with regards to an extension to his current contract after the player stayed at Stamford Bridge despite being linked with a move to Arsenal in the summer transfer window.

The 28-year-old Italian international has been at Chelsea since 2018 and has been a hugely important part of the team under both Frank Lampard and previous boss Maurizio Sarri.

He made 54 appearances in all competitions in his first campaign, with 44 in the 2019-20 season, and he has also featured in three of the Blues’ four Premier League games so far this season, scoring three times and notching up one assist.

But despite being practically an ever-present for Chelsea since his arrival there were rumours Jorginho could depart the club this summer, with Arsenal among the clubs said to have been expressing a strong interest in the player.

A move never materialised, however, and although there were also links with the likes of Napoli Jorginho ended up staying in west London.

Speaking about the competition for places in the middle of the pitch in July, Lampard said: “I have selection issues in midfield. Good issues because I have N’Golo Kante, Billy Gilmour, Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic.

“There are always players who are maybe unhappy or have moments out of the team and that’s Jorginho at the moment.

“If a player is missing for one game or a few games, it doesn’t mean in any way that they are out of my thoughts going forward

“There have been times when he has been pivotal for me this year certainly on and off the pitch. That doesn’t change and I am very happy with him.”

Jorginho could next be in action when Chelsea take on Southampton on Saturday before they begin their Champions League campaign with a tricky-looking group stage game against Sevilla on Tuesday.
