Arsenal are reportedly preparing an improved offer for Houssem Aouar and the player is ready to join Arsenal. The Frenchman has emerged as one of two midfield targets for Mikel Arteta, alongside Atletico Madrid’s Thomas Partey.

The Gunners have already lodged a player-plus-cash offer for Aouar which include Matteo Guendouzi.

Lyon were not interested and turned away the approach leaving Arsenal to reconsider their approach to a potential deal.

Aouar was a shining light in the Champions League knockout stages as Lyon upset the odds to knock out Juventus and Manchester City.

Arteta has been aware of the midfielder’s quality since his days as Manchester City assistant, when he congratulated the player on his performance after a 2-2 draw in November 2018.

“The player would like to come to the Premier League and to join Arsenal but for now there are no negotiations.

“In July they offered Guendouzi as part of the deal and they didn’t find an agreement.

“Now it’s up to Arsenal if they sell players, I am convinced [they will bid again].”

Torreira has agreed personal terms with Atletico ahead of a potential switch.

The Spanish club are adamant the Uruguayan will not be used in a potential swap deal for Partey, who will only leave if his £45million release clause is met.

Lyon are also following Atletico’s stance in regards to Aouar and sporting director Juninho has told Arsenal they will not accept a swap deal.

“I get along very well with the [Arsenal] sports director [Edu],” he told RMC Sport.

“We spoke on the phone. Houssem Aouar is really appreciated by Arteta.

“There have been some discussions for Matteo Guendouzi who is also a good player.

“He was mentioned during the discussion, but this is not the profile we need, we were very clear. If it is like that, it does not interest us at all – it is, and we stopped.”
