Arsenal edged past Premier League rivals Leicester in the third round of the Carabao Cup thanks to a Christian Fuchs own goal and a late Eddie Nketiah strike. Both clubs made a host of changes but it was evident that technical director Edu has two glaring calls he needs to make.

Arsenal made eight changes from the side which beat West Ham 2-1 in the Premier League on Saturday.

The Gunners boss admitted he needs reinforcements in midfield after Granit Xhaka and Dani Ceballos did not dominate against the Hammers.

A host of youngsters and fringe players were given the opportunity to impress manager Mikel Arteta against Leicester.

Joe Willock and Mohamed Elneny were paired together in the heart of the team which faced the Foxes – who made 11 changes of their own.

And although Arsenal’s midfielders kept the ball moving well, against the top teams it may not be enough to break into the top four.

Arsenal have made Atletico Madrid midfielder Thomas Partey and Lyon ace Houssem Aouar their priority targets this summer.

And it is clear that Edu must make the call to sign both men if Arteta is to take the club back into Europe’s premier competition.

Arsenal’s first team in short of a commanding central midfielder and it was clear there was not one in his second team, either.

Partey can add the dynamism that Arteta so desperately longs for and he is available for just £45million.

The Gunners are trying to raise funds to meet the Ghana international’s release clause. They recouped £20m when they sold goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez to Aston Villa last week.

Signing Aouar is another possibility and Edu can contact his fellow Brazilian Juninho, who is Lyon’s sporting director, to facilitate a transfer.

However, the French side will not let the 22-year-old leave on the cheap.

Either way, Edu must act quickly to strengthen the main are of concern and give Arteta the two central midfielders he desires.
